The Department was started in the year 2006 with Under Graduate Program B.E. in Biotechnology Engineering, with an uptake of 30. The department has recognized as a Research centre in the year 2011 for the students who would like to pursue their higher studies. Department also offers one year postgraduate Diploma in Bioinformatics and Big data Analytics (Supported by Karnataka Biotechnology and Information Technology Services (KBITs), Government of Karnataka and Department of Biotechnology, Government of India).
Department imparts training for students to make them competent, motivated engineers and scientists. The department has well qualified faculty members from varied background in Biotechnology domain. Department has established the state-of-art Bioinformatics facility, Fermentation Technology (supported by KBITs) and Nanobiotechnology (collaboration with Chemical Engineering Department).

  1. To establish centre of excellence in the frontier areas of Biotechnology
  2. To develop graduate by inculcating state-of-the-art technologies with professional ethics and social commitments to meet the challenges in Biotechnology
Vision
To provide self-reliant, technologically competent and skilled manpower in Biotechnology for the improvement of socio-economic aspects .
PEOs of the Department
Graduates from the Biotechnology program are expected to attain or achieve the following Program Educational Objectives within a few years of graduation:
  • PEO#1.Graduates will be successful professionals in Biotechnology and allied fields with proficiency of working in a multidisciplinary team.
  • PEO#2.Graduates will pursue higher education or become an entrepreneur in applied Biotechnology and interdisciplinary area
  • PEO#3. Graduates will practice their profession with social and ethical responsibilities

  • PSO#1:  Understand the basic knowledge of Mathematics, sciences and engineering courses
  • PSO#2:  Acquiring Professional knowledge to identify, analyse and solve the problems encountered in Biotechnology

PROGRAMME OUTCOMES (POs)
  • PO1  Engineering knowledge: Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals, and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems.
  • PO2   Problem analysis: Identify, formulate, review research literature, and analyze complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering sciences.
  • PO3   Design/development of solutions: Design solutions for complex engineering problems and design system components or processes that meet the specified needs with appropriate consideration for the public health and safety, and the cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.
  • PO4   Conduct investigations of complex problems: Use research-based knowledge and research methods including design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis of the information to provide valid conclusions.
  • PO5   Modern tool usage: Create, select, and apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering and IT tools including prediction and modeling to complex engineering activities with an understanding of the limitations.
  • PO6   The engineer and society: Apply reasoning informed by the contextual knowledge to assess societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to the professional engineering practice.
  • PO7   Environment and sustainability: Understand the impact of the professional engineering solutions in societal and environmental contexts, and demonstrate the knowledge of, and need for sustainable development.
  • PO8   Ethics: Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics and responsibilities and norms of the engineering practice.

DEPARTMENT MILESTONES
  • 2006 - B.E. Biotechnology program started under Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belgaum, with an intake of 30 students.
  • 2008 - Autonomous under VTU
  • 2009 - Recognized as research center by VTU, Belgaum - M.Sc (Engg) and Ph.D.
  • 2011 - Starting of BT-Finishing School in the Department. The Government has sanctioned Rs.1 crore.
  • 2011 - MoU Sign with 10 leading Biotech companies.
  • 2014 - Starting of HPLC and Fermenter training for Biocon academy students (5 Days Hands on Training).
  • 2015 - Achieved 100% Placement.
  • 2015 - Department has established the state - of - art Nanobiotechnology Lab (collaboration with Chemical Engineering Department).
  • 2017 - The department has been granted Rs 10 lakh/year for running Biotechnology Skill Enhancement Program [BiSEP].
