Dr. H. M. Suresh Kumar
Associate Professor and Head
The Department of Physics was established in the year 1963. Prof. M. Basanna was the first head of the department. Later Dr. K.A. Suresh, Prof. K.S. Shankar, Dr. B. Siddalingappa and Dr. H.K.T. Kumara headed the Department. At present, Dr. Suresh Kumar H.M. is heading the Department. With a continuous infrastructure development since 1963, today the department is equipped with two well established Engineering Physics Labs catering to the needs of First year B.E. Autonomous curriculum. For the first time in the revised syllabus 2014, the Department has introduced the cutting edge technology on Shock Waves with newly invented Reddy Shock Tube in the First year Engineering Physics. At present the department has six teaching faculties among them five are with doctorate and one is deputed for Ph.D. at IISc., Bengaluru. In addition to that there are three supporting staffs to assist the department activities
The Department of Physics is recognized as the Research Center by VTU, Belgaum since 2006. The research center is actively involved in the area of spectroscopy, crystallography, nanocomposites, radiation physics, materials science and allied domain. Three students have received PhD from the center and eight students are currently pursuing their PhD. The research group has published more than 60 papers in international/national journals and about 65 international/national conferences.
Dr Bhargavi K. S. has been awarded 9th Dr D. C. Pavate Memorial Visiting Fellowship at the Department of Theoretical Physics, University of Cambridge, U. K. for a period of four months from September to December 2016.
Dr. S. R. Manohara has an ongoing sponsored research project entitled "Development of novel graphene-polymer hybrid nanocomposites for efficient flame retardant and electromagnetic interference shielding applications" funded from Vision Group on Science and Technology (VGST), Government of Karnataka for period of three years (Duration: 2016-19, Fund received: Rs. 30.00 lakhs) under the Establishment of Centers of Innovation Science & Engineering Education (CISEE) programme. Dr. Manohara has also completed a sponsored research project entitled "Thermally stable graphene based polymer nanocomposites for flame retardant applications" funded by VGST, Government of Karnataka under Seed Money to Young Scientist for Research (SMYSR) programme during 2014-15.
Dr. Bhargavi K. S. has an ongoing sponsored research project entitled "Addressing the Challenges in Designing the Thermoelectric Materials using new Class 3D Dirac Semimetal System and Boltzmann Transport Theory" funded by Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB)under Early Carrier Researcher (ECR) for the period of three years (2017-19).
Dr. Shridhar Mundinamani is a recipient of the Royal Society of Chemistry's Journal of Materials Chemistry A Best Poster Award for poster presentation in 5th Interdiscplinary Symposium on Materials Chemistry (ISMC-2014) organized by Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai during 9 to 13th of December 2014. Title: Supercapacitors based on CdO Thin Films and also he received The best Research Paper Award in 3rd Internationla Conference NANOCON 2014, Organised by Bharati Vidyapeeth Deeemed University Pune (India). Title: Electronic Transport Properties of Organic Molecules Attached on Reduced Graphene Oxide Sheets.
Dr.H.K.T.Kumar has presented his research work in the International Workshop on Shock Waves -ISSW29, July 14-19, 2013 in Wisconsin Madison University, USA and also chaired the session. Dr. S.R. Manohara has presented his research work at DCM-2013 at Riva del Garda, Italy sponsored by DST and CICS.
